Happy Fathers Day
Father's Day originated in the United States in the early
20th century. The holiday is credited to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane,
Washington, who was inspired by a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Dodd wanted to
honor her father, a Civil War veteran who raised her and her five siblings as a
single parent after their mother's death. She proposed the idea to local
religious leaders, and the first Father's Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910,
close to her father's birthday. Initial support for the holiday was
limited, and its popularity fluctuated over the following decades.
Despite early resistance and commercialization concerns, Father's Day gradually gained recognition. President Calvin Coolidge supported the observance in 1924, and President Lyndon B. Johnson issued a proclamation in 1966. It was officially established as a national holiday in the United States in 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed legislation designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day.
The concept of Father's Day spread internationally through
cultural exchange and commercial influences. While the date and customs may
vary by country, the core idea—honoring fathers and father figures—has become a
global tradition, with many nations adopting the holiday and celebrating it in
their own unique ways
